OUR STORY

How it started

Common(s) Church was born in the heart of downtown San Diego during a season of uncertainty and change. In the wake of COVID-19, two churches—Second Sunday & Luminous City—sensed God leading them to come together. What began as a step of faith quickly became a picture of unity: two families merging into one to participate in God’s reconciling work in the world.

From the beginning, our heart has been simple: to create a community where people can encounter God’s presence, find hope, and discover their purpose. We believe church is not just something you attend, but a movement you belong to—a diverse and growing family of people learning to follow Jesus together for the good of our city and beyond.

Downtown San Diego has always been at the center of our story. Here in the middle of the city, we’ve sought to build a church that feels like family: intimate, relational, and transformative. We often call it a “boutique” church—small on purpose, focused on creating space for genuine connection, honest questions, and deep encounters with God.

As we look ahead, our vision is clear: to keep making more room. More room for presence. More room for hope. More room for calling. More room to join God’s mission of reconciliation in our neighborhoods and across the world. What started as two churches coming together has grown into a community with a shared heartbeat: to see people fall in love with God, discover His love for them through Jesus, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live it out.
